These cute DIY Succulent Place Card Holders are totally on-trend and super easy to make! Succulents have quickly become a top element to incorporate in wedding decor, and we love their organic, almost effortlessly-chic vibe. Perfect for outdoor or backyard weddings, they help bring in the soft greens of a natural setting.
Our Desert Love flat place cards and matching invite compliment the planters in color and style – especially if you choose a few different kinds of succulents to use! The slight variation in textural details adds an eclectic, unique look to your tablescape.
With just a small list of materials and store-bought potted succulents needed, these decorations come together rather quickly. No green thumb needed!
Follow along below for the full tutorial!
STEP 1
Gather materials. You’ll need a variety of small succulents (garden/hardware stores like Lowes and Home Depot have a large selection), mercury glass votive holders (Michaels Craft Stores has these in multiple sizes and colors), personalized favor tags/place cards, roundnose pliers/wire cutters, and craft wire (you can find this at any craft store in the beading and/or floral aisle). You might also need some potting soil, depending on how large your succulents/containers are.
STEP 2
Gently remove the succulent from the plastic pot.
STEP 3
Add a spoonful of potting soil at the bottom of your votive holder.
STEP 4
Place your succulent into the votive holder and fill around the succulent with more potting soil if necessary. A small spoon for scooping is super helpful here!
STEP 5
Repeat with the other succulents and votive holders. We love mixing succulent types for some variation!
STEP 6
To create the wire holders, simply cut an 8″ piece of craft wire, and use the roundnose pliers to bend a spiral at one end. Straighten the other end and cut a few inches down from your spiral to create a “pick”. Insert your personalized favor tag/place card in the spiral.
STEP 7
Simply stick your holder in the dirt next to the succulent to finish. Place behind the actual succulent (as opposed to straight down the middle) to avoid damage to the plant!
You’ll want to create this project the day before or day of your event, to keep the plants at their freshest.
We love that the guests can take these favors home, and re-pot as they wish! The succulents will need proper drainage and special soil to keep them healthy.
If mercury glass isn’t your style, feel free to use terra cotta or white clay pots for a different look. They have a wide variety of small pots at your local craft store or hardware/garden center! Same deal with the succulents – if you prefer a different type of flower or plant, choose accordingly!
Have fun creating these pieces!
