We used faux florals here to save on cost and time – they are fuss-free, and allow you to re-use the backdrop for your wedding or future events. The subtle floral color pop and mix of greenery keep the look natural yet feminine, especially fitting for any natural setting. Customize the flower choices to match your particular theme!

STEP 1

Gather materials. You’ll need thick natural jute rope, thin natural hemp cord, scissors, wire cutters (for cutting the faux flowers), faux foliage/flowers (in your chosen color scheme – we used wisteria, white cherry blossoms, small roses and complimentary greenery) and clear-drying craft glue or hot glue. You can find all of these materials at your local craft chain store.

STEP 2

Trim your selected flower stems/foliage so that they are organized into paired groups. We paired a greenery stem with one wisteria drop for the topmost layer in the backdrop. You’ll want to choose the largest/heaviest flowers to add first, then gradate down with smaller-sized floral accents. This prevents the backdrop from being too bottom-heavy.

When trimming, be sure to cut after a crook in the branches – this leaves you with the perfect tying area! Cut a 6″ piece of hemp and very tightly tie the two trimmings together. Leave the ends – don’t cut yet!

Repeat with the rest of your larger foliage/flower pieces. We ended up with 9 total wisteria drops – uneven numbers work best to get a waterfall effect. Set the bundles aside.

STEP 3

Cut 10′ of the larger natural rope and find the exact middle.

Cut nine 6′ pieces of thin hemp cord. Our backdrop was close to 65″ long at the middlemost point. Adjust your measurements depending on the scale you’re trying to create – cut longer lengths if needed.

Tie the very end of one hemp piece to the middle of the rope. Tie tightly! Cut any excess cord, and glue the knot with a very small amount of craft glue. Gluing these knots really helps secure them – you can also use a bit of hot glue, but it tends to get a bit messy if you aren’t careful.

Working outwards, tie 4 pieces of hemp on each side of the middle piece, spacing them about 7″ apart. Be careful to not tangle the cords too much – it helps to work on the floor during making this piece, laying each cord in its respective spot ! Glue all of your knots.

STEP 4

Tie on one floral bundle from Step 2 to this long length of hemp. Again, tie very tightly! Align the top of the stems to hit just below the rope for a nice dangling effect. Cut the excess hemp from the floral bundle- but don’t cut the long length of hemp! You’ll continue to use this length to tie on more floral bundles.

You can choose to glue your knots after you make them, or at the very end. We suggest waiting until the very end, in case you’d like to slide your bundles up/down the hemp slightly to fix spacing.

STEP 5

Create smaller floral bundles (repeating the technique in Step 2) with one small greenery sprig and smaller flowers. You can choose to even just use more greenery for an earthy, more neutral piece. Small rosebuds work really well in the lower bundles, and they won’t weigh down the piece.

Again, make sure you cut the sprigs right after a crook in the branches, which helps a spot to tie knots more securely.  We created 35 small floral bundles – feel free to change up the number depending on the look you are going for.

STEP 6

Tie a small flower bundle onto the middle hemp drop, right under the large wisteria bundle. Cut the excess hemp from this knot (again, be careful not to cut the long hemp length!). Repeat tying small bundles (the middle drop includes 5 small bundles total) down this long length, spacing each a few more inches apart each time. This gives that gradated waterfall effect to the backdrop. Again, this middle drop was about 65″ long in our piece.

Tie wisteria bundles on each of the remaining 8 hemp drops along the rope, using up all of your large flower bundles.

Tie one small flower bundle under each wisteria bundle, just as you did in the middle length. The remaining hemp lengths each include 4 small flower bundles total, excluding the two end lengths, which include 3 small flower bundles. This uses up all 35 small flower bundles you made in Step 5. To keep the waterfall effect, space the bundles a few inches more apart each time.

STEP 7

It really helps to double-check your spacing by placing the backdrop against a blank wall! Command brand sticky hooks work great, and are damage-free. If any of your bundles seem a bit out of place, gently slide them by the knot up or down the hemp to achieve better spacing. Once you are 100% sure of your spacing, glue ALL knots to secure. Cut all excess hemp lengths with scissors to finish.

For a backyard shower, simply tie the excess rope around tree branches and let the flowers flow in the wind…. Being faux florals, these blooms will hold up for this party, and parties to come!
